Public Policy
Evidence and Logic in Public Policy
This course examined why certain historic policy decisions were made and then why they resulted in poor, unexpected outcomes. The primary focus was on historical policies that backfired on the US, and how if the evidence around a situation was analyzed and logic was applied the poor outcome could have been avoided.
Race, Inequality, and Public Policy
In this course, the relationship between race and policy was examined. In the first half of the class, the primary focus was learning about historical and modern policies that are racist and cause modern inequality between people of different racial backgrounds and economic backgrounds. In the second half of the class, we identified several policies that were outwardly anti-racist and studied the impacts those policies had on different communities.
Public Policy is the study of policy-making and all that goes into legislative decisions. In the course of studying this major, I gained insight into how policies are written and how to write policy. I primarily focused on analyzing existing policies and how those policies, due to the nature of their language, produce new policy problems unique to the one that was trying to be solved.
Urban Landscapes
Urban Landscapes focused primarily on how cities were historically planned and the benefits and harms that come from traditional city planning in America. Specific decaying cities were examined alongside cities that are thriving to determine what type of planning is most effective. Future city design was also examined as to how to make cities more eco-friendly.
